Latent Defect A latent defect is some unseen flaw or other imperfection in goods that is known to the seller, but not able to be observed by the buyer.
Law A system of fair rules over the behavior of citizens in any society.
Lawsuit / Suit This refers to legal action taken by a plaintiff against a defendant to fairly resolve an issue in a court of law.
Lay a Foundation Laying a foundation is when evidence is presented to support a witness' expertise or a document's authenticity.
Leading the Witness / Leading When an attorney puts words in the mouth of a witness during a trial, through the direction of his or her questions.
Leading Case Decided case used as a barometer for other cases on a particular matter.
Legal Anything pertaining to the law, particularly anything not in violation of a law.
Legal Action Legal action is bringing a lawsuit to court.
Legal Age The age where a person is determined to be responsible for his or her own actions and can be liable for negligence and other crimes.
Legal Cause The main factor that resulted in damage.
Legal Duty An individual's responsibility to adhere to the law.
Legal Fiction Legal fiction is when a court assumes something to be true to serve justice.
Legal Services Any work done by a lawyer for a client.
Legalese Layman's term for the sometimes lengthy, complex, and exclusionary lingo of lawyers and other legal professionals.
Lemon Law Some states have a "Lemon Law," a statute to help buyers of new vehicles file for just compensation if the seller cannot make it the vehicle run properly.
Liability A responsible for ones own actions or mistakes. Failure of to do so could result in a lawsuit.
Liable To be responsible for some action and thereby owe compensation for reasons such as negligence, debt or punishment.
Liberal Construction Liberal Construction is when a judge goes beyond the literal meaning of a law to use within cases that contain the logic and spirit of that law.
Licensee A person given a license by the government or under private agreement.
Limited Tort Option Individuals in many states who purchase auto insurance can choose an option called "limited tort." This restricts their right to compensation for an accident caused by another driver to economic loss only, and it does not include compensation for pain, suffering or medical bills.
Litigant Any participant in a lawsuit, excluding witnesses and attorneys.
Litigation The process that resolves lawsuits within court.
Loss The value placed on damages caused by someone else's negligence or wrongdoing.
Loss of use The inability to use an item due to damage caused by someone else's negligence or wrongdoing.
