Since the 1930s, several insurance companies have participated in the practice of charging "race-based insurance premiums" on what were called "burial policies" and/or "industrial life policies." African Americans were targeted for these higher insurance premiums based solely on the color of their skin. Insurance companies continued this practice through the 1970s and worked hard at covering up their wrongdoing.
