Thimerosal is a preservative that contains mercury. During the 1990s, Thimerosal was used in several common childhood vaccines to control the growth of bacteria caused by needles inserted into multi-dose vaccine bottles. During the 90's there was also an increase in the number of reported cases of autism, a neurological disorder. Autism tends to develop in the first two years of life, where afflicted children demonstrate neurological, sensory and behavioral problems. It is believed that the dangerous mercury in Thimerosal may be the cause of the increase in autistic cases
