When you visit an office building, restaurant, mall, shopping center, hotel or apartment complex, your presence there is good for those businesses that you visit.  They profit from you willingness to spend your time and money.  These businesses have a duty to you -  the customer, the guest - to make sure that the premises are safe. 

Sometimes people get hurt because the owner does not exercise reasonable care.  Parking lots are not well lit.  Stairways are not properly maintained.  Objects fall. Elevators and escalators do not work properly. Construction area are not properly marked.  People can be seriously injured because of these hazards, which are not their fault.

Worse, in some cases, businesses do not maintain enough security.  Criminals break into cars.  They vandalize property.  They mug and rob innocent people. Sometimes they are beaten, sexually assaulted or murdered.
