Midway, GA (November 7, 2019) – The Georgia State Patrol is still investigating a bicycle accident involving a passenger vehicle that led to injuries on Islands Highway in Midway.
A 60-year-old from Savanna was riding along on his Cannondale bicycle on Islands Highway when a 30-year-old man from Midway who was driving eastbound became distracted. He tried to roll down his window when he reportedly struck the cyclist, not seeing him in the roadway.
The front right bumper of the vehicle struck the cyclist, which caused him to be thrown from the bike and against the windshield of the car.
The driver said that he did not know that he hit a person until he looked in his mirror and saw the cyclist waving his arms at him. The driver has since been cited for DUI, following too closely, distracted driving, and more. He was arrested.
The bicyclist was taken to a local hospital for treatment.
Police continue to investigate the circumstances of the accident at this time.
Our thoughts are with the injured victim and their family in hopes of a full recovery.
