Atlanta, GA (September 11, 2020) – At least five people were injured after a parking deck partially collapsed in midtown Atlanta on Friday.
Officers with the Atlanta Police Department say that the accident happened at the new Emory Midtown Hospital parking lot, which is located on West Peachtree Street at Linden Avenue. Firefighters said that the pre-fabricated wall of the 11th floor collapsed onto the 10th floor around 11:00 a.m.
Officials said the garage was under construction, and at least one person was trapped in the rubble as the wall initially collapsed. Four of the five total injured workers were able to get out of the structure on their own.
Rescue crews were forced to use a saw to free the fifth worker, whose leg has been trapped underneath the concrete. The worker was then placed on a stretcher and lowered to the ground using a crane before being transported to a hospital via ambulance, according to fire rescue squads.
All five workers suffered serious but non-life threatening injuries and are expected to recover.
It’s unclear what caused part of the structure to collapse, but several streets in the area remained closed as officials inspected the remainder of the deck.
No further details have been released about the cause of the accident but the investigation continues at this time.
Our thoughts go out to the injured victims and their families in hopes of a full recovery.
Workplace Accidents in Georgia
Every year, the number of injury-related or even fatal workplace accidents increases in Georgia. In 2017 alone, it is estimated that nearly 200 fatalities took place due to workplace accidents, while many others led to serious injuries for victims. The unfortunate truth is that many of these events are completely preventable.
Furthermore, victims and their families may find themselves in a precarious position after these incidents, wondering who will be found liable for their accident and the trauma sustained in the aftermath.
The bottom line is that your employer and other stewards of your workplace are supposed to ensure that it’s safe for all employees. Each and every employee in the state of Georgia should come home injury-free at the end of the day.
