Clarkesville, GA (August 6, 2022) – A passenger lost his life in a fatal head-on collision that happened on a highway in Clarkesville on Saturday, August 6.

According to police, the accident happened on Highway 17 around the area of Habersham Mill Road Connector. Police confirmed that 24-year-old Alexis White was traveling in her Jeep Renegade near the intersection with a passenger, identified as 22-year-old Christopher Coffman. Suddenly, her vehicle was struck head-on by a Ford F-150 that was traveling south and operated by 61-year-old Melvin Thompson.

Paramedics and several other local responders, including fire crews, were dispatched to the scene to help those in need. White sustained serious injuries including leg trauma and injuries to the abdomen. Thompson also sustained leg injuries. Coffman was tragically pronounced dead at the scene due to traumatic injuries.

The roadway was blocked in the area for an extended period of time following the crash. Police believe that one of the vehicles may have ran through the stop sign without stopping.

The investigation into the circumstances of the collision continues.
