Quitman, GA (October 16, 2020) – On Sunday, October 11, a woman was killed in a fatal bicycle accident that took place in Quitman.
Brooks County officials confirmed that a 62-year-old woman from Valdosta was riding her bicycle headed east on Troupeville Road around 7:34 p.m. She was suddenly struck from behind by a vehicle that was traveling too closely behind her.
The bicycle was struck so forcefully that it veered off the side of the road and landed in a ditch. The vehicle immediately fled the scene of the accident without stopping.
Georgia State Patrol officials confirmed that the driver of the vehicle, identified as a Jasper man from Florida, later returned to the scene of the accident. It is not known if he received charges.
The bicyclist was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident.
No further details have been released. The investigation continues.
