Hurt on US-82, the Columbus Highway or a county road outside town?
Dawson is the county seat of Terrell County, a town of about 4,400 people built around its courthouse square, 24 miles northwest of Albany. US-82, which runs through town as the Columbus Highway, is how most people get in and out, and it’s where a lot of the serious wrecks happen: a driver pulling onto the highway from a side road, a pickup slowing to turn, a log truck that needs more room to stop than anyone gave it.
So now what? Maybe you’ve got a sore back, a car you can’t drive and a stack of papers from the hospital. Maybe an adjuster has already called, polite and in a hurry, wanting your account on a recording. You can tell them you’ll call back. First, figure out who wrote your report, which deadline you’re facing and who you can trust to help.
Kenneth S. Nugent, P.C. has represented injured Georgians since 1980, and our Albany office that serves Dawson and Terrell County is about 24 miles down US-82. The first conversation is free, and there’s zero fee unless we win.

Car and truck accidents in Dawson
Most Dawson injury claims start with a crash on US-82, the Columbus Highway, or on one of the county roads that feed into it. Dawson Police usually work wrecks inside the city limits, and the Terrell County Sheriff’s Office or a state trooper handles the rest. The claim usually goes to the at-fault driver’s insurance company.
Terrell County is a small place, a little over 9,000 people, and much of the traffic on US-82 is just passing through on the way to Albany or Columbus. That mix of local drivers and through traffic is where trouble starts. Our page on Terrell County car accident claims explains what happens after the report. When a tractor-trailer is involved, big-rig crashes on US-82 around Dawson pull in a trucking company, its insurer and driving logs that can disappear if nobody asks for them. Riders and people on foot tend to get hurt the worst, so read about Dawson motorcycle crashes and what happens when a car hits someone walking in Dawson if that’s your situation.
Falls, dog bites and workplace injuries in Dawson
A claim doesn’t always start on the road. Slipping in a store, tripping in a parking lot, a bite from a loose dog or an injury at work can all lead to one. If you were hurt on a city sidewalk or in a city building, the City of Dawson may be responsible, and that brings a six-month notice deadline.
Businesses and landlords are supposed to fix dangers they know about, or at least warn people. If you fell, get pictures of the spot before anyone cleans it up, and find out who owns or manages the property. Our page on falls on Terrell County property covers what else to save. Hurt on the job? Workers’ compensation follows its own set of rules, separate from a lawsuit, and our page on workers’ compensation for Terrell County jobs explains how it works.
Serious injuries and wrongful death
When a wreck causes a brain injury, a spinal cord injury or a death, the claim becomes larger and harder to prove. These cases need complete medical records, the right specialists and a close look at every insurance policy that might pay. Families in Dawson and across Terrell County can talk with us at no cost.
No one should have to argue with an insurance company while they’re grieving. Our page on Terrell County wrongful death claims explains who can bring the claim and what it can recover. And if the treatment after a crash made things worse, read about medical errors after a Dawson wreck.
How long do you have to file a claim in Dawson?
For a claim against another driver or a business, Georgia generally gives you two years to file a lawsuit. If the City of Dawson was involved, you usually have to send written notice within six months. Terrell County and the State of Georgia generally allow twelve months for notice. The clock starts on the day of the crash.
| Who caused the harm | Deadline | Georgia law |
|---|---|---|
| The City of Dawson: a city vehicle, a city street or sidewalk | 6 months to send written notice | O.C.G.A. § 36-33-5 |
| Terrell County: a county vehicle or a county road | 12 months to present the claim | O.C.G.A. § 36-11-1 |
| The State of Georgia or GDOT: a defect on US-82 (Columbus Highway) or another state highway | 12 months to send written notice | O.C.G.A. § 50-21-26 |
| Another driver or a business | 2 years to file a lawsuit | O.C.G.A. § 9-3-33 |
Miss a notice deadline, or send it to the wrong government, and you can lose the right to recover from that government, no matter how badly you were hurt. Terrell County’s three smaller towns, Bronwood, Parrott and Sasser, each have their own six-month clock for claims against them.
Terrell County doesn’t have a State Court. An injury lawsuit here usually goes to the Superior Court of Terrell County, part of the Pataula Judicial Circuit, at the courthouse at 235 East Lee Street in Dawson. Smaller civil claims, up to $15,000, can go to the Magistrate Court of Terrell County. If your crash happened across the line in Albany or Dougherty County, different courts and clocks apply, and we explain Dougherty County deadlines and courts across the line on a separate page.

Who has your crash report in Dawson?
Your crash report is held by whichever agency came to the scene. Inside Dawson city limits, that’s usually Dawson Police. In the rest of Terrell County, it’s usually the Terrell County Sheriff’s Office. On US-82 and other state highways, a Georgia State Patrol trooper may take the report instead.
| Where it happened | Who usually responds | Where to ask for the report |
|---|---|---|
| Inside Dawson city limits, including the streets around the courthouse square | Dawson Police Department | The police department at 432 Crawford Street NE, with your report number |
| Unincorporated Terrell County, which is most of the county | Terrell County Sheriff’s Office | The sheriff’s office at 513 South Main Street in Dawson |
| US-82 and other state highways, when a trooper responds | Georgia State Patrol | The Georgia Department of Public Safety open records unit |
| Across the line in Albany or Dougherty County | Albany Police or Dougherty County Police | See our guide to getting a report from across the Dougherty County line |
Terrell County doesn’t have its own county police department. Outside Dawson, sheriff’s deputies or state troopers handle most crashes. Look at the card or slip the officer gave you, since the agency printed on it is the one holding your report. The insurance company will read that report before it offers you anything, so try to read it first.
