AFTER A GRAY CRASH

One highway, two counties

Gray Highway is the road most people in Gray use to get to Macon, and it’s where a lot of local crashes happen. It’s also one road with two sets of rules. The same highway runs from Macon-Bibb into Jones County, so crashes a mile apart can mean different officers, courts and deadlines.

If you were hurt out there, you don’t need to sort that out before you call. Kenneth S. Nugent, P.C. handles Gray injury cases from our office on Mulberry Street in Macon, about 20 minutes down the highway. Across Georgia we’ve recovered more than $5 billion for over 300,000 clients in 45 years, from 9 offices. There’s zero fee unless we win.

Don’t sign anything an insurer mails you, even if it looks routine, before a lawyer has read it.

Who has your crash report in Gray?

Inside Gray city limits, the Gray Police Department usually writes the crash report. Elsewhere in Jones County, it’s usually the Jones County Sheriff’s Office. If the crash was on the Macon side of the county line, the Macon-Bibb County Sheriff’s Office usually has it, and troopers from the Georgia State Patrol work some highway crashes too.

If you aren’t sure which side of the line you were on, the slip the officer gave you will say which agency responded. For crashes on the Bibb side, our Bibb County crash report guide explains how to request a copy. Or just tell us where it happened and we’ll get it.

Car and truck crashes in Gray

Most serious crashes around Gray happen on the state highways: Gray Highway itself, which carries US 129 and Highways 11 and 22, and the roads that branch off it toward Milledgeville, Monticello and Eatonton. Our Jones County wreck lawyers handle the report, the bills and the insurer from the first call.

Much of Gray Highway is a fast road with businesses, side roads and driveways feeding onto it. Turning crashes and rear-end crashes are common, and so are head-on crashes on the two-lane roads farther out. Heavy trucks use these routes too, and our truck wreck lawyers know which records to save before they disappear.

Country roads are hard on riders and walkers. If you were on a motorcycle, our biker injury lawyers will push back when the other side blames the rider. And if a driver hit you on foot, our attorneys for people hit while walking can help your family through it.

Falls, dog bites and work injuries in Gray

A fall at a store, a church hall or a rental property can be the owner’s fault if they knew about the danger and did nothing. Our premises injury attorneys will tell you honestly if it’s worth pursuing. Photos of the spot where you fell help a lot, because owners often argue the danger was easy to see.

Dog bites happen in town and out in the county alike. Our dog attack lawyers can explain what Georgia expects of an owner. And if you were hurt at work, whether on a job site or in a warehouse, we can tell you whether workers’ comp is your only option or whether someone else is also responsible.

Serious injuries and wrongful death

Most people seriously hurt around Gray are taken down Gray Highway to Macon, where Middle Georgia’s only Level I trauma center is. Our page on where crash patients go in Macon explains what that means. When the injuries are severe, the claim has to cover years of care and lost income, not just the first bills.

Our brain trauma lawyers know a brain injury can look mild at first and change a life later. If a crash took someone you love, our wrongful death counsel will explain who can bring the claim and what it covers, gently and at your pace.

How long do you have to file a claim in Gray?

Most Georgia injury claims must be filed within two years. When a government is involved, you usually must send written notice first. A City of Gray vehicle generally means six months, Jones County generally means twelve, and the State generally means twelve. On the Bibb side of the line, plan on six months for Macon-Bibb.

That notice is called an ante litem notice, Latin for “before the suit.” It’s a letter the government must get before you can sue it. Miss the deadline, and the claim against that government can be lost.

Who caused the harmDeadlineLaw
City of Gray (a city vehicle, employee or city street)Generally 6 months to send noticeO.C.G.A. § 36-33-5
Jones County (a county vehicle, employee or county road)Generally 12 months to send noticeO.C.G.A. § 36-11-1
Macon-Bibb County (on the Macon side of the line)Plan on 6 months to send noticeO.C.G.A. § 36-33-5 or § 36-11-1
The State of Georgia or GDOT (Gray Highway and other state routes)Generally 12 months to send noticeO.C.G.A. § 50-21-26
A private driver, trucking company or businessGenerally 2 years to file suitO.C.G.A. § 9-3-33

Why Macon-Bibb is a special case takes a little explaining, and our Macon-Bibb deadline guide walks through it. The short version: when a government is involved, don’t wait.

Here’s how that plays out. Say a Macon-Bibb truck clips you on Gray Highway just south of the county line. That’s a Macon-Bibb claim, and the safe plan is six months. Move the same crash a mile north, with a Jones County truck, and it’s generally twelve. Same road, same kind of crash, very different clock.

Where a Gray case is heard, and getting to us

Jones County is part of the Ocmulgee Judicial Circuit. It doesn’t have a State Court, so a Gray injury case filed locally generally goes to the Superior Court at the courthouse on South Jefferson Street. A case can also be filed where the at-fault driver lives, which is sometimes Bibb County.

We’ll explain which court makes sense for you. The Macon office is a straight shot down Gray Highway into downtown, usually about 20 minutes. If you can’t drive right now, tell us and we’ll come to you.
