AFTER A MIDDLE GEORGIA CRASH

Where are injured people taken after a crash in Macon?

The most seriously hurt are usually taken to Atrium Health Navicent The Medical Center on Hemlock Street. It’s Middle Georgia’s only Level I trauma center verified by the American College of Surgeons, for both adults and children. People with less serious injuries often go to the nearest emergency room instead.

If you’re reading this from a hospital bed, or for someone you love who’s in one, we’re sorry. This page is here to help you make sense of where you are and what happens next. It isn’t medical advice, and if you’re hurt right now, call 911. When you’re ready to talk about the claim, Kenneth S. Nugent, P.C. is a phone call away, and there’s zero fee unless we win.

Don’t sign anything an insurer or a billing office hands you in the hospital before a lawyer has read it. Some forms quietly give up rights you’ll need.

A Level I trauma center has surgeons and specialists ready around the clock for the most serious injuries. That’s why people badly hurt on I-75 near Forsyth, on Gray Highway in Jones County or on Watson Boulevard in Warner Robins often end up in Macon, even if another hospital is closer. The smaller hospitals on this list are still where many people are treated and released, and a lot of crash injuries never need a trauma center at all.

Children are a special case. The Medical Center treats seriously injured children as a trauma center, and the children’s hospital next door has its own emergency room. If your child was in the car with you, their care and their records matter just as much as yours.

Who decides where you go

Usually the paramedics do, based on how badly you’re hurt, how far each hospital is and which one can treat your injuries. In Bibb and several surrounding counties, Navicent’s own ambulance service answers many 911 calls. For the most serious crashes, a medical helicopter may fly patients to The Medical Center, which has a helipad.

You may also start at one hospital and be moved to another. A transfer isn’t a bad sign on its own. It often means the first hospital wants you where the right specialist is. For your claim, though, every stop creates its own records and its own bills, and all of them matter.

Why the hospital matters for your claim

Your medical records are the strongest proof of what the crash did to you. The ambulance report, the emergency room notes, scans and discharge papers all show your injuries in the words of the people who treated them. Insurers read those records closely, and gaps or delays are what they look for first.

Bills can arrive fast, sometimes from providers you don’t remember seeing. In Georgia, a hospital can place a lien on an injury claim for its charges, which means part of any settlement may have to go toward that bill. Our vehicle accident lawyers deal with those liens and the insurers so you don’t have to.

When the injuries are serious, the claim has to reach years ahead. Our head injury attorneys know brain injuries often show up in small ways after discharge, and our attorneys for wrongful death claims help families when a crash ends in the worst possible way.

Someone you love still in the hospital? Call 478-295-5765. We can talk while you’re at the bedside, and we’ll come to you.

What to do this week

  • Keep every piece of paper. Discharge instructions, prescriptions, bills and any cards from ambulance crews.
  • Go to your follow-up visits. Many injuries get worse before they get better, and a skipped visit is what an insurer notices.
  • Make a list of every provider. The ambulance, the ER, any transfer hospital, doctors, therapists and pharmacies.
  • Get the crash report number. Our Macon-Bibb crash report help page shows where to request it.
  • Don’t give a recorded statement. Especially not while you’re on pain medicine.

If the crash happened at the interstate interchange, our page on I-75 and I-16 crash claims covers who may be responsible. If a base vehicle was involved, see Robins AFB injury claims. And you can always reach our Macon injury team, a few minutes from The Medical Center.
