Here’s what catches a lot of families off guard. Hinesville is not in Chatham County, so Savannah’s rules don’t carry over. And the post next door is federal land. On post or off post: who has your crash report?

It depends on where the crash happened. Inside Hinesville city limits, the Hinesville Police Department usually writes the report. In unincorporated Liberty County, meaning outside any city’s limits, the Liberty County Sheriff’s Office usually does. On Fort Stewart, military police handle it, and the post keeps its own records.

For a Hinesville police report, the Records Section is at 123 East M.L. King, Jr. Drive, and the city also offers crash reports online. The first copy is free to people involved in the crash, and reports are generally ready within five business days. You’ll sign a short statement saying why you need it, such as being hurt in the crash. Bring the report number from the card the officer handed you.

Don’t assume the city worked your crash, even inside city limits. In July 2026 a chase that started in Walthourville ended in a crash at General Screven Way and West Oglethorpe Highway, and the Georgia State Patrol’s reconstruction team took the investigation. Fort Stewart works differently. Military police investigate crashes on post, and the post’s Records Administration office keeps military police and traffic reports. Requests have to be made in person, and federal privacy rules can hold back parts of a report. The same office covers Hunter Army Airfield in Savannah. If your crash happened on either post, a different process applies, so call us before you do anything else.

Got a ticket from Hinesville police? It goes to Hinesville Municipal Court, in the same building at 123 East M.L. King, Jr. Drive. That case is separate from your injury claim, so talk to us before you pay it or enter a plea. If your crash was in Chatham County instead, Chatham County’s crash report agencies are covered on their own page. Those agencies don’t handle Liberty County crashes.

What deadlines apply to a Liberty County injury claim?

Most Georgia injury lawsuits must be filed within two years. Claims against a government move faster. If the City of Hinesville played a part, written notice is generally due within six months. Liberty County and the State of Georgia generally allow twelve months. A claim tied to Fort Stewart follows federal rules instead.

That written notice is called an ante litem notice, which is Latin for “before the suit.” It’s a formal letter you must send a city, a county or the State before you’re allowed to sue it. For a city like Hinesville, the notice generally has to state the specific amount of money you’re asking for. Miss the deadline or leave out a required detail, and the claim can be lost.

Crashes on Highway 84 and the roads near post

Many Hinesville crashes happen on US-84, which runs through town as Oglethorpe Highway, past stores, restaurants and a lot of busy, stop-and-go traffic.
