Who has your crash report in Port Wentworth?

Inside Port Wentworth city limits, the Port Wentworth Police Department usually writes the crash report, and the city sends people to a paid online report service for a copy. Outside the city, in parts of Chatham County that no city covers, it’s often the Chatham County Police Department. The Georgia State Patrol works some crashes on I-95 and the state highways.

The line between those areas isn’t always obvious from the driver’s seat. In September 2025, one injury crash at Highway 21 and Market Boulevard brought out Port Wentworth police, Chatham County police and the State Patrol at the same time. The city has also grown by annexation, so a stretch that was county road a few years ago may be inside the city now. Two crashes a mile apart can end up in two different files.

Two more edges matter here. Effingham County begins at Port Wentworth’s northern edge, so a crash a little way up Highway 21 can belong to a different county entirely. To get a Port Wentworth police report yourself, the city’s traffic page says you’ll need the date of the crash, the department that responded, and one of three things: a driver’s last name, the report number, or the vehicle identification number (VIN). You’re welcome to do it. You don’t have to. Tell us the road and the nearest cross street, and we’ll find the right report and read it closely. How long do you have to file a claim in Port Wentworth?

Most Georgia injury lawsuits must be filed within two years. Claims against a government move faster. If the City of Port Wentworth played a part, through a city vehicle, a city worker or a city street, written notice is generally due within six months. Chatham County and the State generally allow twelve months from the day you were hurt.

That notice has a name: an ante litem notice. It’s Latin for “before the suit,” and in plain English it’s a formal letter you have to send the government before you’re allowed to sue it. For the City of Port Wentworth, the notice generally has to state the specific amount of money you’re asking for. Miss the deadline or leave out a required detail, and the claim can be lost.
