The city inside the city
Remerton is a separate city of about 1,300 people on a fifth of a square mile, completely surrounded by Valdosta. It has its own government and its own police department. After a crash, that changes who writes the report and, if a city vehicle or street was involved, where the six-month notice goes: to Remerton, not Valdosta.
The town grew up around the Strickland Cotton Mill in 1899, and the mill village streets are still here, now mixed with student apartments and the bars and restaurants along Baytree Road. On a weekend night the road is packed with people on foot, rideshare pickups and drivers who have had too much. Maybe you were one of the people on foot. Maybe you were stopped at a light on Baytree and someone never braked. Now you’re sore, the car is at a body shop, and an adjuster wants a statement before you’ve seen a doctor.
Kenneth S. Nugent, P.C. handles Remerton injury cases from our Valdosta office on North Ashley Street, a few minutes up the road. Across Georgia we’ve recovered more than $5 billion for over 300,000 clients in 45 years, from 9 offices. There’s nothing to pay up front, and zero fee unless we win.
Don’t sign anything an insurance company sends you before you’ve talked to a lawyer, no matter how friendly the adjuster sounds. Early paperwork can close doors you’ll want open later.
Who has your crash report in Remerton?
Inside Remerton’s city limits, the Remerton Police Department on Poplar Street usually writes the crash report. Cross the line into Valdosta, which can happen in a block, and Valdosta Police have it. The Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office works the unincorporated county, and the Georgia State Patrol works I-75 and some state routes. The officer’s card tells you which.
| Where the crash happened | Who usually has your report |
|---|---|
| Inside Remerton: Baytree Road through town, Plum Street, Poplar Street and the mill village streets | Remerton Police Department, 1759 Poplar Street |
| Baytree Road, Gornto Road or Patterson Street once you’re back in Valdosta | Valdosta Police Department |
| Unincorporated Lowndes County | Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office. Lowndes has no county police. |
| I-75 or a state route where a trooper worked the scene | Georgia State Patrol |
| On the Valdosta State campus | VSU University Police |
The city line is the hard part. Remerton is small enough that the same night out can start in Valdosta, pass through Remerton and end in Valdosta again, and the crash report belongs to whichever department answered the call. If you’re not sure who came, look at the slip or card the officer handed you. If nobody came, which happens on minor wrecks, file a report yourself with the agency that covers the spot.
Not sure who worked your crash? Call 229-458-4477. Tell us where it happened and we’ll figure out which agency has the report.
Car, pedestrian and rideshare crashes on Baytree Road
Most Remerton crashes involve Baytree Road, the bars and restaurants along it, and the student housing around them. Drunk drivers, rideshare pickups in traffic lanes and people crossing mid-block at night are the pattern. Our car accident lawyers near Remerton handle the report, the medical bills and the insurance company from the first call, with zero fee unless we win.
If the driver who hit you had been drinking, Georgia law can hold them responsible for more than your bills, and in some cases the bar that kept serving them shares the blame. Our guide to drunk driving and rideshare crashes in downtown Valdosta and Remerton explains how those claims work and why the first week matters. If you were on foot, pedestrian accident claims near Valdosta covers how fault works when there was no second car. A mid-block crossing does not end your claim.
Remerton sits between the Valdosta State campus and the Bemiss Road corridor, so a crash that started here can belong to one of our other guides: North Ashley Street and the VSU campus, or Bemiss Road out toward Moody. For wrecks on the interstate, see truck and car crashes on I-75 through Lowndes County.
How long do you have to file a claim in Remerton?
Most Georgia injury claims must be filed within two years. If a government was involved, written notice comes first. Remerton is its own city, so a claim against it is generally due within six months, and so is one against Valdosta. Lowndes County and the State of Georgia generally allow twelve. The notice goes to whichever government caused the harm.
| Who caused the harm | Deadline to send notice | Georgia law |
|---|---|---|
| The City of Remerton (a city vehicle, employee or city street) | Generally 6 months | O.C.G.A. § 36-33-5 |
| The City of Valdosta (a city vehicle, a Valdosta street) | Generally 6 months | O.C.G.A. § 36-33-5 |
| Lowndes County (a sheriff’s car, county truck or county road) | Generally 12 months | O.C.G.A. § 36-11-1 |
| The State of Georgia or GDOT (a state route, a state vehicle) | Generally 12 months | O.C.G.A. § 50-21-26 |
| A private driver, bar or business | Generally 2 years to file suit | O.C.G.A. § 9-3-33 |
That written notice is called an ante litem notice, Latin for “before the suit.” For a claim against a city, it generally has to name a specific dollar amount, and sending it to the wrong city does not stop the clock on the right one. Remerton catches people for exactly that reason. You can drive through it in under a minute without seeing a sign.
Was a city or county vehicle involved? Call 229-458-4477. Six months goes by fast. It’s worth a call this week.
Falls, apartment injuries and dog bites
Not every injury happens on the road. A fall on a wet bar floor, a broken stair rail at a student apartment or a dark parking lot behind a restaurant can be the property owner’s responsibility if they knew about the danger and did nothing. Our premises liability lawyers will tell you plainly whether you have a claim.
Student housing deserves a word of its own. Landlords and management companies have to keep the common areas reasonably safe, and “we didn’t know” is not much of a defense when tenants have been complaining for months. Keep the texts and emails. If a dog bit you or your child in the mill village, Georgia law looks at what the owner knew about the animal, and the same is true for a dog at a friend’s apartment.
Serious injuries and wrongful death
A crash on Baytree Road at night can be devastating. When there’s a brain injury, a spinal cord injury or a death, the claim has to cover years of care and lost income, not only the first hospital bill. We bring in treating doctors and life care planners early, so the claim reflects what your family will actually face.
Our brain injury attorneys know that symptoms of a head injury can show up days later. If you lost someone, our wrongful death team will explain who can bring the claim and what it covers, at a pace your family can handle.
Where a Remerton case is heard, and finding us
Remerton is inside Lowndes County, so an injury case from a Remerton crash is usually filed in the State Court of Lowndes County, or in Superior Court, at the judicial complex in downtown Valdosta. Most claims settle before anyone files. If the at-fault driver lives somewhere else, the case may be filed in that county instead.
Our Valdosta office is at 2935 North Ashley Street, Suite 127, a few minutes from Baytree Road. Hurt too badly to drive? Tell us, and we’ll come to you.
