Inside Harlem, the city’s police department usually writes the crash report and the city’s six-month clock applies to claims against the city. Step just west of town and you may be in McDuffie County instead, which has its own sheriff, its own courthouse in Thomson and a different judicial circuit. The line decides it.

Some things don’t change at the line. The Georgia State Patrol works many crashes on the US highways and I-20. A claim against the State of Georgia or GDOT generally allows twelve months, and a claim against a private driver or business generally allows two years to file suit.

Most serious crashes around Harlem happen on a few roads: Milledgeville Road (US 78 and 278) through town, Louisville Street and the Harlem-Appling Highway (US 221) up to I-20 Exit 183, and the county roads that connect to Grovetown and Appling. How long do you have to file a claim in Harlem?

Most Georgia injury claims must be filed within two years. When a government is involved, written notice usually comes first. Harlem is a city, so a claim against it is generally due within six months. Columbia County and the state generally allow twelve. If a city claim is possible, the notice also generally has to name a dollar amount.
