Where are people taken after a serious Augusta crash?

The most seriously injured people in the Augusta area are usually taken to Wellstar MCG Health, a Level I trauma center on Georgia’s list and, by its own description, the region’s only one. Doctors Hospital of Augusta is a Level II trauma center and home to a large burn center. Less serious injuries often go to the nearest emergency room.

This page explains where people are usually taken, why some get moved, and how those records end up mattering for a claim. Nothing on this page replaces your doctor’s advice.

Trauma levels come from Georgia’s Department of Public Health, which designates hospitals by the kind of injuries they’re equipped to handle. Level I centers can treat the most complex injuries around the clock. A Level II center handles most serious injuries too. Paramedics generally decide where to go based on how badly someone is hurt, not only on which hospital is closest.

What changed for Columbia County

For years, Columbia County had no hospital of its own. That changed on August 26, 2026, when Wellstar Columbia County Medical Center opened in Grovetown with an emergency department. Doctors Hospital also opened a freestanding emergency room on North Belair Road in Evans in December 2025.

Those new doors matter for people in Evans, Martinez and Grovetown. A sprain or a broken wrist may now be treated closer to home. The most serious injuries, like a major head injury or severe burns, may still be taken or transferred to the trauma centers in Augusta, and that’s normal.

Why you might be moved to another hospital

It’s common to be treated at one hospital and then transferred to another. An emergency room may stabilize you and then send you to a trauma center, or a burn center, for care it isn’t set up to give. A transfer doesn’t mean something went wrong. It usually means you’re being sent where the right team is.

For a claim, though, a transfer means your records are split across two or more hospitals, sometimes with an ambulance service in between. Each keeps its own file and sends its own bills. When we build a claim, we gather every piece, because an insurance company will look for gaps.
