Dangerous Drugs

Representing victims of serious drug side effects in Georgia

Most widely-used drugs can help people.  But those same drugs can cause severe side effects, medical conditions, and even death.  The Georgia dangerous drugs lawyers at Kenneth S. Nugent, P.C. have the experience needed to help victims pursue the fair compensation they deserve through various legal options, including individual and class action lawsuits.

Examples of drugs with potentially serious side effects

The following are examples of a range of recent situations caused by drugs:

  • Accutane. Primarily used to treat severe acne, about 5,000 lawsuits have been brought against manufacturer Roche Pharmaceutical due to severe adverse reactions that include inflammatory bowel disease, ulcerative colitis, and Chron’s disease.  Roche pulled this medication from the United States and 11 other countries in 2009, citing competition from generics and lawsuits as the reasons.
  • Chantix.  This non-nicotine drug is prescribed to assist with smoking cessation.  Although not the subject of product recall efforts, Chantix carries a long list of potential side effects, including nausea, heartburn, drowsiness, various intestinal disorders, nightmares, suicidal tendencies, psychosis, and homicidal drives.
  • Avandia.  Used to treat type 2 or adult onset, non-insulin dependent diabetes, thousands of individuals have filed suits against manufacturer Glaxo due to injuries and suffering caused by the medication, which is known to increase the risk of serious cardiovascular complications.  This medication has not been recalled, but the FDA has issued warning requirements.
  • Reglan. Primarily used to treat heartburn, this drug has been linked to a number of serious conditions, including high blood pressure, slowed heartbeat, liver problems, seizures, and disorders similar to those of Parkinson’s disease.
  • Yaz.  This oral contraceptive is used to prevent pregnancy, treat Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder, and treat acne.  More than 100 lawsuits have been filed against Bayer Pharmaceuticals due to dangerous side effects, including gallbladder disease, heart attack, stroke, deep vein thrombosis, and pulmonary embolism.
  • Tylenol (acetaminophen).  Although most commonly connected with Tylenol products, this pain medication is common in many over-the-counter and prescription medications.  It is linked to many side effects, and has been the subject of a number of product recalls.
  • Actos. Actos, is a prescription medicine manufactured by Takeda Pharmacedicals Co, ltd.  Actos comes in a pill form that is used by type 2 diabetic in conjunction with their normal sugar control program.  It is not recommended for use by Type 1 “juvenile” diabetics or diabetics with ketoacidosis.
  • Zoloft/Paxil. Zolif (Sertraline) and Paxil (Paroxetine) have been linked to serious birth defects.  Zolif and Paxil are taken as an antidepressant.  They affect the chemical in balance in your brain that can lead to depression, panic, anxiety, or obsessive compulsive symptons.

Regardless of whether a drug is the subject of current class action or individual lawsuits, anyone who suffers adverse effects from prescription or over-the-counter medication needs to explore available legal options.  Georgia dangerous drugs lawyer Kenneth S. Nugent, P.C. has the experience needed to pursue compensation from drug manufacturers whose products cause injury or death.
