AFTER THE AMBULANCE

Where does the ambulance go after an Atlanta-area crash?

For the most serious crash injuries, ambulance crews around Atlanta usually head for a trauma center, not the closest emergency room. In Fulton, DeKalb, Cobb and Clayton counties, only two hospitals hold the state’s top adult level: Grady Memorial in downtown Atlanta and Wellstar Kennestone in Marietta. Less serious injuries often go somewhere closer.

If you’re reading this from a hospital bed, or from the chair beside one, you have enough on your plate. Maybe the ambulance drove right past a hospital that looked closer. Maybe you were moved to a second hospital in the middle of the night and nobody explained why. There’s usually a reason, and knowing it helps once the bills and the insurance calls start.

Sign what you need to get care. Don’t sign anything from an insurance company, whether it’s a release, a records authorization or a check, before you’ve talked with an attorney.

Which hospitals near Atlanta are trauma centers?

A trauma center is a hospital the state has reviewed and designated to treat serious injuries around the clock. Georgia ranks them from Level I, the highest, down to Level IV. The Georgia Department of Public Health keeps the official list. When an older article or a neighbor says something different, the state’s list is the one to trust.

Here’s how the state’s 2026 list looks for the four counties served by our Midtown office.

HospitalWhereState trauma levelWhat it usually handles

Wellstar Kennestone HospitalMarietta, Cobb CountyLevel I adult since 2024The most serious injuries on the Cobb and northwest side
Wellstar North Fulton HospitalRoswell, Fulton CountyLevel II adultSerious injuries on the north side, with some patients moved to a Level I
Wellstar Cobb HospitalAustell, Cobb CountyLevel III adultStabilizing care in south Cobb, with transfers for the worst injuries

Look at what’s missing. No hospital in DeKalb or Clayton County appears on the state’s list as an adult trauma center at any level. A bad wreck on I-20 in DeKalb or on Tara Boulevard in Clayton can mean a longer ride, often to Grady. Just over the Henry County line from Clayton, Piedmont Henry Hospital in Stockbridge is a Level III center.

Why did Atlanta lose a Level I trauma center?

Atlanta once had two adult Level I trauma centers. Wellstar Atlanta Medical Center, on Boulevard about two miles from Grady, stopped taking ambulances in October 2022 and closed on November 1, 2022. For about a year and a half, Grady was the metro’s only adult Level I. Kennestone earned the same level in May 2024.

Earlier in 2022, Wellstar had also closed the emergency room at its East Point hospital, Atlanta Medical Center South. Together, those closures put more of the city’s emergency and trauma load on Grady. On the Cobb side, Kennestone’s Level I status means more of the most serious injuries can be treated without a transfer.

Why does that matter to you? It explains where you ended up. And it can explain why your care started in one place and finished in another.

Why might you be moved to a second hospital?

Ambulance crews use triage rules that match how badly someone seems hurt to the care a hospital can give. If you went to a closer emergency room first, doctors may send you to a trauma center once they see the whole picture. Level II and III centers can start treatment, then move the most severe injuries to a Level I.

Every stop makes its own paperwork. Each hospital, each ambulance service and often each doctor group sends a separate bill. When we build a claim, we gather every one of them, because a missing record can make an injury look smaller than it was.

Georgia law also lets a hospital, nursing home or doctor’s practice that treated your injuries file a lien on your injury claim, under O.C.G.A. § 44-14-470. In plain words, they can ask to be paid out of any settlement. That’s one more reason not to sign a release or cash a settlement check on your own.

If you or someone in your family is still in the hospital after a crash, call us today at 404-609-1075. We can start collecting records and take the insurance calls while you focus on getting better.

How do you get your hospital records?

Federal privacy law gives you the right to copies of your own medical records, including emergency room notes, scans and bills. Ask the hospital’s medical records office, which some hospitals call health information management. Ask for the ambulance report too. The ambulance service keeps it, not the hospital.

Keep a simple list as you go: every ambulance, every hospital and every follow-up doctor, with dates. It sounds small. It’s one of the first things a lawyer will ask you for, and having it ready can save weeks. Nothing on this page replaces your doctor’s advice about your care.

What do trauma care and transfers mean for your claim?

Kenneth S. Nugent, P.C. has helped injured Georgians since 1980. A trip to a trauma center usually means the injuries were serious, and the records from that first night often become the backbone of a claim. Our lawyers for serious car wreck injuries make sure the insurance company sees the whole path of your care, not just the last stop. If the crash caused a head injury, our team for traumatic brain injury claims knows how often those symptoms show up days later. You pay nothing up front, and zero fee unless we win.

The hospital is only one piece. Where the crash happened decides which court hears your case and how long you have to act. Start with the page that fits:

What should you do this week?

  1. Write down every place you were treated: the ambulance, each hospital and any transfer, with dates.
  2. Keep discharge papers, bills and anything a hospital hands you in one folder.
  3. Ask each hospital’s medical records office for your records, and ask for the ambulance report.
  4. Hold off on giving the other driver’s insurance company a recorded statement or a signed records authorization.
  5. Call the Atlanta office on Peachtree at 404-609-1075. Tell us where you were treated, and we’ll talk through what comes next.

What do the hospital terms mean?

  • Trauma center. A hospital the state has designated to treat serious injuries around the clock.
  • Level I. The highest trauma level in Georgia. A Level I center can handle almost any injury at any hour.
  • Transfer. Moving a patient from one hospital to another, often to reach a higher level of care.
  • Hospital lien. A legal claim a hospital or doctor can place on your injury settlement to get paid for your care.
  • Ambulance report. The crew’s written record of what they saw and did on the way to the hospital.
