SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) – WTOC’s, and Ken Nugent’s, “Day of Giving” wrapped up after a long and productive day at the Kroger on Mall Boulevard.
The event kicked off at 6 a.m. Thursday and WTOC was there all day.
All day long people have been dropping off food, filling bins over and over. It’s looked like this most of the day, we have not been able to contain the generosity.
The food will soon be delivered to America’s Second Harvest and help them help local families get through the holiday season, an effort that was helped by everyone who donated food Thursday in the spirit of giving and the spirit of the season.
“For every dollar donated to Second Harvest, we can actually provide five meals. Because we leverage those dollars and get the food free and pay for transportation, so it really helps us a lot for that. And that $1,000 will actually help so many people in our community,” said America’s Second Harvest Executive Director Mary Jane Crouch.
“Well, I think if someone’s fortunate enough to sit down and have food on their table every night, you look at yourself and say I want to do something for somebody else. It personally makes me feel grateful for what I have and grateful that we can give back,” said Jean Lahrens, Safe Shelter of Savannah Board of Directors.
“A few years ago, my brother, sister and I, we decided not to exchange gifts with each other anymore. We decided we have everything we need, so each one of us, instead of giving to each other, we give to a charity or we give to something like this. A little bit goes a long way,” said Carleen Goding, customer.
The “Day of Giving” was supposed to end at 7 p.m., but the food that’s still at Kroger will not be delivered to America’s Second Harvest until Friday morning. The folks at Kroger said they will leave a couple of bins out to keep taking donations.
