Augusta, GA (May 4, 2023) – Around 3:21 a.m. on Wednesday morning, May 3, a man was killed in a fatal pedestrian accident on a highway in Augusta.

According to Richmond County officials, the accident happened in the eastbound lanes of I-520 around the area of Sand Bar Ferry Road. Police confirmed that a pedestrian was walking in the area when they were struck by a vehicle that was headed eastbound at the time. It is believed that the driver of the vehicle remained at the scene after the accident.

Paramedics, fire crews, and several other responders were dispatched to the scene to help those in need. The pedestrian, who has only been identified as a 36-year-old man from Augusta, was tragically pronounced dead at the scene due to traumatic injuries at 5:05 a.m.

The roadway was blocked in all eastbound lanes of traffic for some time. Police worked to clear the scene by 6:17 a.m.

No further details have been released, but the investigation into the collision continues. Police will update with new information as it becomes available.
