Newnan, GA – Deputy and Civilian Injured in Truck Accident on I-85

4/6 Newnan, GA – Deputy and Civilian Injured in Truck Accident on I-85

Newnan, GA (April 6, 2023) – A deputy and one other person sustained injuries in a serious truck accident on a major roadway in Newnan on the morning of Thursday, April 6.

According to Georgia State Patrol responders, the collision happened around 5:30 a.m. in the northbound lanes of I-85 near the area of mile marker 21. Police confirmed that a Coweta County patrol vehicle was traveling north on the highway when the driver suddenly left the roadway due to reasons that are not yet known. The vehicle overturned, and the deputy was ejected.

Following the initial collision, a tractor-trailer driver started to slow down for the deputy. In doing so, a 2010 Toyota Corolla struck the rear of the tractor-trailer. An Infiniti that was following behind them then slammed into the patrol vehicle, setting off a chain-reaction collision with severe damages.

Paramedics, fire crews, and several other responders were dispatched to the scene. The Coweta County deputy and the driver of the Corolla both sustained severe injuries in the accident. They were rushed to Midtown Medical Center by medical helicopter.

Due to the severity of the collision, most of the highway was blocked in the area for an extended period of time. This led to extensive delays in the area.

The investigation into the circumstances of the collision continues. Police will update with new information as it becomes available.

We offer our warmest thoughts and prayers to the parties injured in this accident with hopes of a full recovery.
