Columbus, GA (November 26, 2020) – Two people were injured in an explosion on Monday afternoon at Smith Road, and first responders say that the explosion occurred due to a workplace accident.
Columbus Fire and EMS responded to the explosion at Smith Road, where the two people sustained injuries.
The explosion happened at the Robinson Paving Company around 2:30 p.m. Officers with the Columbus Police Department say that the incident involved a large tank containing kerosene.
Fire Marshal Ricky Shores reported that Columbus crews worked to cool the tank, and an airport crash truck was also called to the scene to assist in the response.
Shores says the cause of the explosion is under investigation and a fire team was staying at the scene to monitor the tank. A hazardous materials team is also working to clean up the area.
The facility was closed down for an extended period of time, and local EMTs transported both victims to an area hospital. Their current conditions are unknown.
The investigation into the circumstances of the accident continues, and further details have not been released at this time.
