Murray Co, GA - Toddler Dies After Drowning Accident at Carters Lake

Murray Co, GA (May 31, 2021) – A small child drowned on Memorial Day, May 31, and officers are now investigating the circumstances leading up to the accident.

Deputies with the Murray County Sherriff’s Office are working with state agents to piece together the events leading up to the child’s death, which occurred at the Carters Lake reservoir. Sheriff Jimmy Davenport said that his office is also working with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI).

Mark McKinnon with the Georgia Department of Natural Resources also confirmed the drowning on Monday but said that the 3-year-old child was removed from the water before the department’s authorities arrived on the scene. McKinnon stated that the child was found unresponsive in the water, and Army Corps of Engineers officers, bystanders, and an MCSO deputy attempted life-saving measures. However, they were not able to revive the child.

Carters Lake has 62 miles of shoreline and covers 3,200 acres. The average depth of the lake is said to be 200 feet, but some parts are as deep as 450 feet. Officials say that it is Georgia’s deepest lake.

No further details have been released but the investigation is ongoing.

Our deepest condolences go out to the family of the deceased victim.
